Author Sadie Robertson Huff states, “Do not see the world as dark, see it as light. When you find darkness bring the light into it. The way to remove darkness is to shine light on it.” In my senior exhibit, “Let There Be Light” the intention of each of my pieces is to embody a sentiment that conveys this same uplifting message of light and hope in a heavy world. Through photography and drawing I was able to find the beauty and commonalities in both nature and how our world has been created. Through each piece, I share my perspective on how everywhere we look we can see a glimpse of God’s beauty, his light, and his loving grace as is depicted though his creations. The lens of my camera allowed me to capture not only everyday subject matter but also moments of time with varying qualities of light based on the time of day or season of the year. In my drawings, I was able to focus on the ability to manipulate the value scale by using charcoal pencils and Prisma colored pencils and was able to add more details and intricacies to subject matter such as a rose or human hands. Throughout the years, I have found inspiration from both Cj Hendry and John Shaw's use of vibrant color. Cj Hendry creates hyperrealist colored pencil drawings that create a style of contrast between the colors as well as the balance between the composition. John Shaw creates vibrant photography pieces that show movement and emphasis within the colors. For me, art has always been a way for me to share my own thoughts and feelings. I always want to make sure that when I portray my thoughts and feelings through my pieces that I also allow others the space to be able to interpret their own thoughts and interpretations as well. I believe each artist should know exactly what they are trying to portray and be able to reach his or her audience in a meaningful way. Inspired by my mother and grandparents, my personal journey as an artist has also provided me with a passion to educate young minds and afford those minds abundant opportunities to let the beauty of their artistic creations shine through.
